Kathmandu to Pokhara: Flights, Tourist Bus, and Drive Times

By Ajay Kumar Shrestha 5 min read

Most Annapurna treks begin in Pokhara, 200km west of Kathmandu, and you have three ways to cover it: a 25-minute flight, a 6 to 8-hour tourist bus, or a private jeep. The flight saves a day, while the bus is the cheapest and most scenic when the road is clear.

The Kathmandu to Pokhara journey is the standard transfer before the Annapurna Circuit, Annapurna Base Camp, and Poon Hill treks, so it pays to choose the option that fits your schedule.

Flying: 25 minutes

Flights between Kathmandu and Pokhara take 25 minutes and cost roughly USD 100 to USD 130 one way, with several daily departures on Buddha Air and Yeti Airlines. Morning flights give clear mountain views and the best on-time record, and we recommend them when your trekking days are tight.

Tourist bus: 6 to 8 hours

Tourist buses leave Kathmandu around 7am and take 6 to 8 hours along the Prithvi Highway for USD 10 to USD 30, depending on standard or premium coach. Road works and traffic can stretch the journey, so it is best on the day before your trek, not the same day.

Private jeep or car

A private jeep costs USD 120 to USD 180 and lets you leave when you want, stop for photos, and travel as a group. For groups of four or more, the per-person cost is close to the bus with far more comfort. We arrange any of these transfers as part of your trek package.
