Gokyo Lakes Trek
The Gokyo Lakes trek is the Everest region's finest alternative to Everest Base Camp — and for many photographers and experienced trekkers, it is the superior experience. The route climbs the Gokyo valley west of the main EBC trail to a system of six glacial lakes at 4,750–5,000m, alongside the Ngozumpa Glacier — Nepal's longest at 36km. At its head is Gokyo Ri (5,357m), a viewpoint that delivers a panorama of four 8,000m peaks — Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu — in a single 360-degree sweep.
While 40,000+ trekkers per year follow the EBC route through the Khumbu, a fraction venture into the Gokyo valley. The lodges are smaller and more personal. The lakes — turquoise, sacred, and set against the backdrop of the glacier — are among the most beautiful in the Himalaya. Gokyo Ri at sunrise is widely regarded as the single finest Everest viewpoint in Nepal, offering a perspective unavailable from Kala Patthar.
The Gokyo Lakes trek can be done as a standalone 12-day route, or combined with the Everest Three Passes circuit by adding the Cho La pass crossing to reach EBC. For those who want the complete Khumbu experience, the combination is unmatched. For those who want Gokyo's views without the demand of Three Passes, this 12-day route delivers everything that matters.

Common questions.
How is the Gokyo Lakes trek different from EBC?+
The Gokyo Lakes trek follows a different valley entirely — the Gokyo valley west of the main EBC route. You do not go to Everest Base Camp on the standard Gokyo route (though you can add it with the Cho La crossing for the Three Passes circuit). Instead, you reach Gokyo village (4,750m) beside the third glacial lake, then climb Gokyo Ri (5,357m) for what many consider the finest Everest panorama in Nepal — four 8,000m peaks in one view. The trail is significantly quieter than the EBC route.
Can I combine Gokyo Lakes with Everest Base Camp?+
Yes — the most popular combination is the Everest Three Passes circuit, which links Gokyo to EBC via the Cho La pass (5,420m). This adds approximately 6 days to the Gokyo itinerary and turns it into the most comprehensive Khumbu experience available. See our Everest Three Passes Trek for the full circuit itinerary. We can also design a custom route that combines Gokyo with EBC via a non-technical route through Namche.
What is Gokyo Ri and why is it considered the best Everest viewpoint?+
Gokyo Ri (5,357m) is a hill above Gokyo village that provides a 360-degree panorama including Everest (8,849m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,485m), and Cho Oyu (8,188m) — four of the world's six highest peaks in a single frame. Kala Patthar on the EBC route shows Everest more prominently but is blocked on some angles by the Nuputse ridge. From Gokyo Ri you see the full context of the mountain range, with the Ngozumpa Glacier below. Many photographers and experienced trekkers consider Gokyo Ri the superior viewpoint.
What are the Gokyo Lakes?+
There are six Gokyo Lakes — sacred glacial lakes fed by the Ngozumpa Glacier at altitudes between 4,750m and 5,000m. The third lake (beside Gokyo village) is the largest. They are sacred to the local Sherpa community and swimming or fishing is prohibited. The colour changes with weather and season: deep turquoise in clear October skies, silver-grey under cloud. The contrast of the turquoise water against the grey glacier and white peaks is one of the finest visual experiences in the Khumbu.
How difficult is the Gokyo Lakes trek compared to EBC?+
Comparable in physical demand. Both involve similar daily walking distances and altitudes — Gokyo Ri at 5,357m versus Kala Patthar at 5,545m. The main difference is the path profile: the Gokyo valley ascent is slightly more gradual. The Gokyo route is generally considered slightly less crowded and slightly less developed above Machhermo, which some trekkers prefer and others find less comfortable. Our acclimatisation protocol is identical to EBC.
