Khopra Ridge Trek
The Khopra Ridge trek is one of the Annapurna region's best-kept secrets — an 8-day route that climbs to a high ridge camp at 4,660m with some of the most dramatic Dhaulagiri (8,167m) views in Nepal, passes the sacred Khayer Lake (4,500m), and sees a fraction of the trekkers who flood the Poon Hill and Annapurna Base Camp trails.
The route branches from the main Annapurna circuit at Ghorepani and climbs south-east along a high ridge rather than dropping into the Annapurna Sanctuary. From Khopra Ridge camp (4,660m), Dhaulagiri fills the entire western horizon in a view that many guides consider more dramatic than anything available from Poon Hill. Annapurna South and Hiunchuli close the eastern horizon. The ridge itself — high, open, and windswept — feels wilder and more remote than anything on the main trail network.
Khayer Lake (4,500m), a 3-hour detour from Khopra camp, is sacred to local communities and almost entirely unknown to international trekkers. The colour of the water — deep blue-green at this altitude — and the silence of the surrounding high meadow make it one of the finest short walks in the Annapurna region.

Common questions.
What is Khopra Ridge and why is it called a hidden gem?+
Khopra Ridge (4,660m) is a high ridge in the Annapurna Conservation Area that branches south from the main circuit at Ghorepani. It offers exceptional views of Dhaulagiri (8,167m) — views that many guides consider more dramatic than those from Poon Hill — plus the sacred Khayer Lake (4,500m) and a complete absence of the commercial trekking infrastructure that characterises the Poon Hill and ABC trails. 'Hidden gem' is accurate: it sees perhaps 1–2% of the trekkers who walk to Poon Hill.
How does Khopra Ridge compare to Poon Hill?+
Poon Hill (3,210m) delivers a famous sunrise panorama of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. Khopra Ridge (4,660m) goes significantly higher and delivers more sustained Dhaulagiri views from a wilder, less commercial vantage point. Khopra includes Poon Hill — we do the sunrise there on Day 4 before continuing to the Khopra ridge. So you get both: the famous Poon Hill sunrise and the less-known but arguably superior Khopra Ridge views.
What is Khayer Lake?+
Khayer Lake (4,500m) is a sacred glacial lake about 3 hours from Khopra camp, almost completely unknown to international trekkers. It sits in a high meadow bowl with no permanent habitation and extraordinary silence. The lake is sacred to the local Gurung community. Its colour — deep blue-green at this altitude — and the surrounding landscape of high meadow and distant peaks make it one of the finest short walks in the Annapurna region. We include the Khayer Lake day trip as a standard part of the itinerary.
Can I combine Khopra Ridge with ABC or the full Circuit?+
Yes — Khopra Ridge connects naturally with both. You can descend from Khopra to Chhomrong and continue to Annapurna Base Camp (adding 5 days). You can also approach Khopra from the Annapurna Circuit at Tatopani by climbing back up to Ghorepani and continuing on the Khopra branch. We design custom combined itineraries on request — contact us with your available days.
