The Everest region — the Khumbu valley of Solukhumbu district — is protected as Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. Treks here range from the classic Everest Base Camp trek (12–14 days, up to Kala Patthar at 5,545m) to the demanding Three Passes trek (18–21 days, crossing Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La), the scenic Gokyo Lakes trek (turquoise glacial lakes and the Gokyo Ri viewpoint), and Island Peak climbing (6,189m) for trekkers wanting a guided introduction to mountaineering. An EBC with helicopter return option is also available for travellers short on time.
Access is almost always by short mountain flight from Kathmandu (or Ramechhap/Manthali in peak season) to Lukla, one of the world's most dramatic airstrips, followed by 8–9 days of walking to base camp. Every route in the region requires a Sagarmatha National Park entry permit and a Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality entry fee — both arranged locally, with no separate TIMS card needed in this region.
This is Sherpa homeland: the trail passes through Namche Bazaar, Tengboche Monastery, and villages that have hosted mountaineering expeditions for over 70 years. The best seasons are March–May and October–November, when Lukla flights are most reliable and the high passes are clear.
